Career Pathways & Professional Development

Hands-on Learning

Our Career Pathways and Professional Development programs introduce students and teachers to inner workings of the theater industry.

Career Pathways for Students

The Career Pathways program gives Maryland students experience in theater industry jobs such as stagehand work/management, wigs, costumes, lighting, sound, and more. HFI also offers tech-and-touch tours upon request.

Students explore a variety of roles, broadening their horizons and opening doors to new professional opportunities. Whether a student’s passion lies in the spotlight or behind the scenes, our collaboration with industry professionals helps them discover their potential.

Professional Development

Our professional development opportunities for teachers go beyond the stage, providing one-on-one consultations and tutorials on sound and lighting operations with training from IATSE stagehands.

With on-site training in schools, experts from the Hippodrome Theatre provide feedback on sound and lighting operations. This helps teachers and students gain practical knowledge and skills to operate their own theater equipment.

We are especially thankful that our scholars were chosen to participate in the Career Pathways Program during 2023. The hands-on technical experiences taught by IATSE stagehands during this program sparked interest in industry careers and helped students gain skills that are brought back to school to help enhance the lights and sound on our theater performances. We are so proud that because of this experience and skills learned during the program, one of our students has been hired and has begun working with IATSE!
